Essential Oils Commonly Used During Labor
As doulas, we use essential oils while supporting our birth clients all the time. Whether it be through a diffuser, on a cotton pad for smelling, or used with a carrier oil during massage, our essential oils are put to use quite frequently. Here are some of the oils we use most often!
Lavender: calming and relaxing, lavender is a comfort scent for many, can also ease muscle tension
Clary sage: can cause contractions, often used with a carrier oil during pressure point massage, also has been shown to reduce cortisol levels
Peppermint: great for nausea, grounding and helps with focus
Citrus: citrus blends are perfect for waking up and energizing, increases awareness and energy levels
Eucalyptus: has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties
Jasmine: a very pleasant and comforting scent, jasmine has been linked to boosting mood and confidence
Ylang Ylang: reduces stress, muscle tension, and in some cases has even lowered blood pressure!
Always be safe and cautious while using essential oils and never ingest them. If interested in essential oil use during pregnancy and/or labor, please talk to an aromatherapist!
